On how the vulnerable sectors understand Climate Change; Do they have an adaptive capacity on the changing climate
A situation in one of the bunkhouses in Tacloban City during rainy days.
Recently, Eastern Visayas has been named by the National Economic and Development Authority which has the highest number of poverty incidence in the country next to Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
Authorities say that this NEDA result has been expected because thousands of people lost their livelihoods because of typhoon Yolanda last 2013. The coconut industry is the backbone of the economy in the Region.
A year after the storm, survivors were still struggling for survival despite having (some of them) a decent shelter where they can be comfortable again. Millions of people lost their livelihoods.
Many initiatives also have been undertaken to bring back the normal lives of the people by restoring their homes and helping them recover by giving them livelihoods.
They said that many of us even around the world learned from what we have experienced. Yes, it’s true. But, is this really true in the communities where the vulnerable sectors lived?
Do they really understand what Climate change is? It has been admitted that the issue of climate change has been in the back seat. Many journalists didn’t have the time writing environmental stories that discuss the effects of climate change.
Only experts in the field of science understand what is. Many writers were afraid of using the terms for it might be wrong and would result confusion to the readers. If we, from the media, hesitates to tackle that important issue, how much more the poor people.
The word climate change has been just relevant to the lives of the people when Yolanda struck the Eastern Visayas. Before, this was just discussed by experts and authorities.
How do poor people adapt to the changing climate? What would be their role in mitigating the effects of climate change? No one from the government has an initiative on informing the public especially the vulnerable sectors on what they can contribute.
Poor people only know on how to find ways and means to feed their hungry stomach. They only think how they can eat today and maybe tomorrow. But the essential role of the government to inform and educate the people is absent. [END]
