DSWD Secretary inaugurates Day Care Center and Footbridge in Barugo and Basey

Tacloban City ---Through the National Community-Driven Development Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the unity of the community in Brgy Balud, Barugo Leyte; a new footbridge connecting Brgy Balud and Bgry Minohang was constructed.

The construction of the footbridge 160 linear meter sub-project was made possible by the Millennium Challenge Corporation through its funding. As of March 31, 2016 a total of 956,820,096.62 pesos has been granted to the community in Leyte, Samar, and Northern Samar.

Forty-one percent of the MCC fund was allocated to the basic infrastructure; forty-six percent for basic social services and thirteen percent for disaster mitigation.

Before the construction of the footbridge, the communities living in Brgy Balud were using the wooden bridge which is very dangerous to school children and elderlies because the structure has no railings.

Inauguration of the Day Care Center 

“Eto ang ebidensya na alam ng mamamayan kung ano ang kanilang pangangailangan,” said DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman.

Meanwhile, Asian Development Bank Country Director Richard Bolt, Su Chin Teoh, ADB Country Specialist, DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman and DSWD Regional Director Restituto Macuto personally attended the inauguration of the newly constructed Day Care Center in Brgy Balud, Basey Samar that can withstand 250 kilometers per hour wind. It can be remembered that during typhoon Haiyan, eight (8) residents of the said Brgy died.

In his speech, Bolt thanked the efforts of the community, volunteers, their team and the DSWD for making the project possible. ADB is now celebrating their 50th anniversary of existence in the Philippines.

The Day Care Center was funded by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction through the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan- Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services of the DSWD.

Other than the building, the ADB also donated chairs, building blocks, tables and chairs for the pre-school children and electric fan, where they can learn comfortably.
